Boots to scrubs - Empowering women to become ‘Country Docs’
The Boots to Scrubs: Rural Women in Medicine Scholarship is revolutionising pathways for young rural women aspiring to become doctors in Australia's remote regions. Founded by Chloe Campbell and Georgia Goodhew under the Australian Medical Students Association, this program seeks to bridge the mentorship and resource gap that rural women face when pursuing a career in medicine. With strong support from the Rural Doctors Network and the NSW Medical Women’s Society, Boots to Scrubs offers financial assistance, guidance on medical exams, and insights into university pathways. By providing a community and a $7.5K scholarship, Boots to Scrubs empowers rural women to step confidently into medicine.
How the experiences of country medical students is breaking down barriers for rural women to become doctors
The Boots to Scrubs program, created by AMSA members Chloe Campbell and Georgia Goodhew, is breaking down barriers for rural women aspiring to become doctors. Built on their personal experiences growing up in remote areas with limited mentorship, Boots to Scrubs offers tailored support, including mentorship with rural female doctors, detailed resources on the UCAT/GAMSAT exams, and insights into various medical school pathways. In 2024, Boots to Scrubs launched its inaugural scholarship—a $7.5k award, a mentorship opportunity, and a Birdsnest voucher—to financially and professionally empower first-year rural female medical students.
