  • AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Location: Canberra (with rural sites in Bega, Cowra, Young, Cooma, Goulburn and Eurobodalla)

    Type of Degree: Postgraduate

    Length:  4 Years

Rural Focus: Each year 29% of ANU’s intake of medical students is from a rural background. Rural applicants may be eligible for consideration in the rural sub-quota. To be considered for the sub-quota applicants must complete the Rurality question in the GEMSAS application and submit supporting documents.

ANU offers a rural entry scheme into medicine via the Bachelor of Health Science. Out of the 60 positions available in the Bachelor of Health Science, 30% are reserved for rural students. Offers for ANU medicine through this degree are based on WAM, interview and a written statement (GAMSAT is not required). 10 out of the 30 offers for medicine are reserved for rural students. ANU also gives preference to rural students in the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) Science for ANU medicine. Selection through this pathway is based on GPA, interview and progression through the degree (GAMSAT not required).

Students can apply to do their whole of Year 3 in one of the rural campuses (Bega, Cooma, Eurobodalla, Goulburn, Young or Cowra) through the Year 3 Long-Term Rural Stream. Students not in the Long-Term Rural Stream also undertake a 6-week rural placement in rural NSW or the Northern Territory. There is also the opportunity to do short-term placements in rural NSW during Year 4.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: ANU reserves places in the medicine program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway. Entry requirements are the same for domestic entry students and are based on GPA, GAMSAT and interview. Applicants can apply for this pathway by indicating their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status on their GEMSAS application or by directly applying to ANU. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are admitted into the program are automatically considered for a scholarship.

Admission scores: For domestic entry into ANU medicine applicants require a minimum Weighted GPA of 5.0 and an overall GAMSAT score of 50 with at least a 50 in each section.
