Medical Programs

  • MONASH UNIVERSITY

    Locations: Bendigo and Melbourne (rural sites in Mildura, Bendigo, Warragul, Traralgon, Churchill, Leongatha, Sale and Bairnsdale)

    Type of Degree: Undergraduate

    Length: 5 Years

    Rural Focus: Monash University boosts the chance of rural students’ entry into medicine via the Dean’s Rural List. Requirements for this list include listing one of the three Monash medicine options as your first VTAC preference, minimum ATAR of 90 and passing the UCAT. Students on the list may be invited for a medicine interview. Entry is based on final year results, UCAT, and the interview. 

    Monash University offers the Extended Rural Cohort which gives students the opportunity to spend the three clinical training years at a rural clinical site in regional and rural Victoria. Applicants for the Extended Rural Cohort must nominate this when applying through VTAC using the specific VTAC code to be considered for the program. 

    Other one to two year rural placements are also available for students not in the Extended Rural Cohort. 

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: Monash University Indigenous Student Access Scheme engages with students applying for medicine via an interview and provides support, including financial and educational support to students throughout their degree. 

    Admission scores: Applicants require a minimum ATAR of 90 however, successful applicant typically require a higher ATAR. The lowest ATAR score to receive an offer in 2024 as a bonded student was 92.15. The lowest ATAR score to receive an offer for non-bonded school leaver entry was 96.90. 

    As a guide the lowest UCAT total score for a December interview for the Dean’s Rural List in 2024 was 2730 (66th percentile). For Victorian-based non-Dean’s Rural List applicants the lowest UCAT total score for an interview was 3140 (93rd percentile) in 2024). Selection for the interviews in December is based on UCAT score only.

  • DEAKIN UNIVERSITY

    Locations: Geelong, Ararat, Warrnambool, Ballarat (other rural sites include Bacchus Marsh/Melton, Camperdown, Colac, Daylesford, Hamilton, Horsham, Portland and Stawell)

    Type of Degree: Postgraduate

    Length: 4 Years

    Rural Focus: Deakin University offers the Domestic Rural Training Stream (RTS) which consists of 30 places for rural students. Rural students who meet criteria may be eligible for adjustments to GAMSAT and GPA. RTS students are selected based on GAMSAT, GPA, written application and interview scores. RTS students complete all four years at a rural campus. Year 1 and 2 are based primarily at either Deakin’s Warrnambool Campus or East Grampians Health Service, Ararat. Year 3 and 4 is completed at one or more of Deakin’s rural clinical schools: Ballarat, Warrnambool or a Rural Community Clinical School (RCCS) location (Ararat, Bacchus Marsh/Melton, Camperdown, Colac, Daylesford, Hamilton, Horsham, Portland and Stawell). Note RTS students are not able to train at the Geelong and Eastern Health Clinical School locations.

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: Up to 7 domestic places in the degree are reserved for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students through the Indigenous Entry Stream (IES). Entry is based on GPA, IES application form and interview performance (GAMSAT not required).

    Admission scores: Minimum GPA of 5.0 and minimum GAMSAT overall score of 50 with a minimum of 50 in each of the three sections is required (GAMSAT is not required for students within the Western Victoria Primary Health Network and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students). 

  • UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

    Locations: Shepparton and Melbourne (with many rural placement options across Victoria) 

    Type of Degree: Postgraduate

    Length: 4 Years

    Rural Focus: UniMelb offers the MD Rural Pathway with 15 spots for graduates of La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) degree and 15 for other postgraduate rural students.

    Students in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) degree (at La Trobe University) have guaranteed entry into medicine contingent on a weighted average mark of 70 throughout their undergraduate degree.

    Selection for the 15 postgraduate rural students is based on an interview and GPA (GAMSAT is not required for entry). Selection is based on a combined rank list where the interview contributes 70% and the GPA contributes 30%.

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: The MD Indigenous Pathway is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who have completed a previous degree in the past 10 years. All applicants with a GPA of 5.0 or above will be invited to an interview. Selection is based on GPA and interviews (GAMSAT is not required for entry).

    Admission scores: Applicants require a minimum GPA of 5.0 for Rural and First Nations Pathway (GAMSAT not required).

    Entry requirements for the standard pathway include a minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT. Offers for the standard pathway are made on the basis of a combined ranked list where the interview contributes 50%, GPA contributes 25% and GAMSAT contributes 25% to the final ranking.
