Medical Programs

  • FLINDERS UNIVERSITY

    Location: Adelaide (with rural locations including the Riverland, Mount Gambier, Hills Mallee Fleurieu, Barossa Valley, Greater Green Triangle region, Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Nhulunbuy)

    Type of Degree: Undergraduate & Postgraduate

    Length:  6 Years (Undergraduate), 4 Years (Postgraduate)

    Rural Focus: Undergraduate rural applicants can apply to be considered for the rural and remote sub-quota when they apply through SATAC. 

    Postgraduate applicants can apply for the SA Rural Medical (SARM) Program, which allows students to study rurally. Students will study Years 1 and 2 of the program in the Riverland or Mount Gambier in the Greater Green Triangle. In Years 3 and 4, students will study in either the Hills Mallee Fleurieu, the Barossa Valley, the Riverland or Greater Green Triangle region. Priority admission is for residents of rural South Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and interstate applicants with rural backgrounds. 

    Flinders University also offers the Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP) to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The NTMP allows students to undertake their entire medical training in the Northern Territory including Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Nhulunbuy. Preference for this program is given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and Northern Territory residents.     Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: There are two entry streams available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. Both are available to postgraduate applicants. However, only the Indigenous Sub-Quota is available for undergraduate applicants:

    Indigenous Sub-Quota: Up to 5 places are available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. Undergraduate applicants require a minimum ATAR of 90 (after the addition of eligible bonus points) to be considered for a place in this sub-quota. Postgraduate applicants require a minimum GPA of 5.0 and a valid GAMSAT score to be considered for this sub-quota. 

    Indigenous Entry Stream: This stream allows applicants with or without a valid GAMSAT score entry into the Doctor of Medicine program. Applicants require a minimum GPA of 5.0 and to attend an interview after the completion of the Preparation for Medicine Program (5-day intensive in-person program)and Flinders University Extended Learning in Science (24-week online course, 5-hours per week that covers chemistry, physics, biology and numeracy). 

    Admission scores: Undergraduate applicants require a minimum ATAR of 95 (after the addition of any relevant adjustment factors). Students commencing Flinders University in 2024 had ATAR scores ranging between 90.40 and 99.95, with a median rank of 99.45. Ranking offers are based on combining Year 12 subject results (90%) and UCAT score (10%). 

    Postgraduate applicants require a minimum GPA of 5.0 and a minimum score of 50 in all sections of the GAMSAT (except for applicants in the Indigenous Entry Stream).

  • UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE

    Location: Adelaide (with various rural placements available across South Australia and in Broken Hill)

    Type of Degree: Undergraduate

    Length: 6 Years

    Rural Focus: A minimum of 40 places in Adelaide Medical Program are reserved for rural students. Rural students are eligible to apply under the Rural Background entry pathway. Rural applicants must meet university requirements. 

    University of Adelaide offers rural and remote placements for students throughout South Australia and across the border in Broken Hill. Students can spend between 4 weeks to a full academic year in a rural location. In Year 5 students can elect to join the Integrated Medical Program and spend a year living and working in a rural community including: Barossa, Broken Hill, Ceduna, Clare, Jamestown, Kadina, Mount Barker, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln/Tumby Bar, Port Pirie, Roxby Downs/Whyalla and Cummins. 

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry: The University of Adelaide offers the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway which allocates a minimum of four places for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. All applicants in this pathway are eligible to attend a panel interview via Zoom. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are not required to sit the UCAT. 

    Admission scores: Applicants require a minimum ATAR of 90 or a minimum GPA of 5.0 for applicants with tertiary qualifications. UCAT scores contribute 20% of total entry score, while interview score and academic results contribute 40% each of total entry score.
